Vocal Tips

Updated: Feb 20, 2020

Nowadays in the rap game you do not need to have great vocals to make a hit..

at least that’s how it seems.

I truly believe vocals are one of the most important features of music. Especially because that’s how we listen to and interpret messages that artists give us through their music.

Personally, my vocals aren’t where I want them to be, but I am constantly working on them to mature my sound. Working on vocals can be tough, especially without a coach.

So here are some things/tips that I do to work on my vocals.

TIPS:

1. Sing in your spare time.

- one of the easiest ways to improve your vocals is to sing in your spare time. By yourself you feel more comfortable, so this is the time to work on it. Even if you only rap, it’s still good to work on your singing. It will add to your overall sound when delivering through a microphone. Singing in the shower is the best. Singing in the shower is all about reducing stress: you work your lungs and inhale more oxygen. By oxygenating your blood, you reduce the level of cortisol, the stress hormone. Singing increases the production of endorphins and other hormones of happiness.

2. Listen to others that sing.

- It can be your favorite major artists or even your friends. Take notes on how they change their pitch during different sequences of a song. Practice that on your own time as well.

3. Just be you.

— Especially when it comes to learning how to sing. Don’t put any pressure on yourself because you don’t sound like Drake, Ariana, etc. Developing a unique voice/sound takes time. Be patient with it.
